Silver???

I stopped dying my hair for the summer because it seemed a waste of money to pay to have my hair dyed red only to have the chlorine pools leach all the color out in just a week. I only dye it because I like being a red head verses being a dirty blonde (code for mousy dull light brown).  I just found out last night, while looking in the bathroom mirror, that two years of dying my hair red has hidden the fact that I now have dull mousy brown hair riddled with silver. YIKES!!

I'm only 35 1/2 but I guess with all the stress of the last 6 years it's not really all that surprising that the silver has taken root in my hair. I don't mind my hair showing my age, it's just hair after all. I'm just not ready to give up the red permanently yet. Like I said before, I don't dye my hair to cover the grey. I dye it because I like being a redhead. I guess when the day comes that I don't want to dye it anymore and I have so much silver that I get that dreaded "skunks tail" growing at my roots I'll just have to shave my head.

I wonder how I would look bald.....?

  1. Gosh, I can't remember when I first found a sliver, ney grey hair on my head, but it shocked the pants off me, so I then checked downstairs and sure enough there was a grey hair there as well and I came to the realisation that I wasn't a spring chicken anyone... It's the pants when it happens, I know that feeling so well, but are you really 35? You look so much younger!

    1. Haha! Too funny Jason!

I can honestly say I haven't checked south of the border for silver yet... I don't think I want to know! lol

Yes, I am most definitely 35, turning 36 around Christmas. With a 12 ½ year old girl to boot, I feel all of those 35 years most days! Thank you for saying I look younger! Now if I could just feel younger! Ha!

    1. Jo-Anne,

I'm the same. I've dyed my hair, or highlighted it, just for the sake of something different for so long I just had no idea the silver was there. Unfortunately my style is so short that when I do go completely silver there will be no hiding it on the back of my head... oh well ;)

    1. I hear stress makes it worse... but I'd venture to say excitement can too. With your exciting life you'll be all silver by the time you're 50!! Kidding...sota ;)

  5. I think I started going grey in my 20's. I have no idea what colour my hair would be if I stopped colouring it now but I think more silver than anything else.

    1. Funny thing about my hair, Mynx, is that the color itself changes from light to dark & back light again over the years. So really when I stop dying it I really have no clue what color its going to be either. Now I guess it'll just be silver! LOL

  6. CJ I am 28 and getting loads of greys and I am pretty sure no company carries my shade of red in a bottle. TBH I embrace it and relish getting older but I wonder if I will one day have to rename my blog to Grey Blog Man (at least the initials will stay the same)

    1. Oh but my dear Ginger BlogMan.... being ginger is so very much more than just the color of your hair. It's your creamy white skin that glows like it's illuminated by the delicate rays of the moon. And the delicious freckles most gingers get from the warm rays of sun. Not to mention the legendary fire that gingers are reportedly to have ;)

No matter the color of your hair.. once a ginger.. always a ginger! :D

  7. I've had silver since I was 16, right down the middle. I thought it would be full by now, but it's not even close. I don't know, I've come to like it. I'd trade in the mostly white beard if I could. Still, I suppose it's different for women? Hmm, as long as the hubby is good with it, and you can live with it, just enjoy it?

I bet, like age, it hits some people. When I hit 33 I cried and moaned like a baby for at least three or four months. Something about life being over and all. It's a life hit for some. A dawning understanding?

Good luck with it. Still, hope you enjoy more than fret. Earned and savvy, I say.

    1. Hello Doom!

The Sailor is good with it. I'm okay with it, I was just shocked at how much was there. My mother is 56 & my father 59 and they are just getting to the point where the grey/silver is starting to creep up close to the 30% mark. Maybe it will slow down. Either way I'll deal just fine with it.

Age has no affect on me other than simple awe at where the hell did the years go. The Sailor on the other hand.... He freaked out when he hit 25. You would have thought the world was ending because he turned 25 and had yet to have his first child..... 61 days later our first child was born, talk about a drama queen!

      :D

p.s. I's rather be 100% silver at 40 than loose all my teeth... I'm grateful for the little things... like teeth! :)

  8. hehe wait till the little ones start pointing it out Little Man likes to sit behind me and count the grey strand by strand. My grandma use to say the grey was a sign of her wisdom and survival as each one told a story. How are you doing I was afraid that since I was such a horrible friend and hadn't visited in a while you would be home. i knocked on your other door(wink) only to find out you no longer live their. Glad to see you still pop into the summer home. anyways hope all is good with you and the family.

    1. Oh Becca!

Little Man would so get it if he did that to me!! LOL!! I agree with your grandma. The Sailors grey hair quantity has spiked after each stressful event in the last 6 years (mostly deaths).

You are not a bad friend. I am a remiss blogger!! Yes I sold the other house. I was ready to move to another venue. Someday's I miss it, but in reality it's the neighbors I miss not the house.

All is good here in the mitten of Michigan. I trust that all is well in the sunshine state?

  9. There is something about being in your space that always makes me feel relaxed and hopeful; like everything will eventually right itself in the world. When I come to visit I feel like I never have enough time to spend or take in everything. The blogosphere is such a respite. Silver. Let me tell you I've been thinking of growing mine out and have been talking about it at the salon for sometime, but it's a really long process. One of these days, though...everyone at my house will have a big surprise :) Hope the upcoming school year is great for the girls, and brings a lot of interesting reading for us. lol

    Hugs!!

    1. Robin,

Thank you so much! I'm so happy that you feel comfort here. My heart is warmed by your words :)

The easiest way to grow out the color is to do like I did a few years ago... just hack it all off after you've let the roots show for a while! Best thing I ever did, going short, although I do still dye the crap out of it!

School starts in under a week.. I'm nervous but the girls are so excited!
